40% midterm with a single essay question, 60% final and two essay questions. Class always ran 15-30 minutes overtime, and he also had a bit of outdated information regarding a few religious beliefs. You can tell he is very knowledgeable and nice, but his class formatting comes across as lazy and far more difficult than necessary.

Dr. Schafer is a super nice and extremely smart professor. I found the concepts taught in class VERY interesting but the delivery of the course was poor. There were surprise assignments that were not marked and he does not use any slides or post on UMLearn. The three-hour lectures often went overtime and it was hard to focus for such a long time.

My favourite prof for fall 2020 ! As long as you can apply the principles and make a strong case for your argument youll do great. It doesnt matter what stance you have. He gives you ideas for arguments in lectures so be sure to attend those. Def. not a GPA booster, but if youre interested in PHIL, its a great class.

Very vague guidelines on what he's looking for on evaluations. Grade is only based on midterm and final, so there's little room for improvement. Typically whatever you get on the midterm will be your final grade. Does not give feedback. Albeit the lectures were interesting, but sitting for 3 hours is difficult. Avoid this prof, save your gpa.

The class has no structure. You have no powerpoint or any notes. Doesn't use UMLearn. He's really quiet so if you miss something he says, there's no way to find that information later. He's really nice though. Also, required to read JS. Mill, which is near impossible and english is my first language. International students beware.

Lectures are amazing; every class was interesting and fun to attend. However, if you're a science student looking for an easy GPA boost this is not the class for you. 40% midterm and 60% final means that you get almost no feedback on your writing, AKA you don't learn what he expects from you; he wants specific things from you, but doesn't say what.

Prof Schafer is a nice guy but his classes have no structure and do not facilitate note taking. This is especially jarring given that everything tested comes from what he talks about in class. he talks so much that you have to pay very close attention the whole time and attend every class to pick out necessary info. Also does not use umlearn.

Ethics in Biomedicine made me anxious before classes even began in Fall term but after knowing Dr. Schafer and the way he teaches, it became my favourite class. Hes very passionate and shares relevant and interesting stories about the topics we discussed in class. Class midterm (40%) and final exam (60%) are both essays. but hes a nice marker.

Classes are very interesting, open discussions on the topic. Exams are very straightforward and you will do well if you prepare essay questions before the exam. Write down key arguments he provides in class. The 3 hour classes go by quickly because he usually tells stories and gets students involved. Very little homework if you go to class.

I found the course structure to be a bit loose (free flowing class discussion as opposed to structured lectures) but overall enjoyable. Because so many classes are devoted to two topics only (half the course for each topic), I found it hard to choose only a few arguments for the essay exams. Not a fan of the vague letter grading instead of numbers.

Feels like a TedTalks everytime I walked into that class. Awesome and friendly prof that is willing to answer all the questions you have. There are lots of readings, but they are not boring and 2-3 key readings are discussed in detail in class. Highly recommend! The grading scheme is frightening, but there are no surprises, topics are clear.

I enjoyed his lectures a lot and have to recommend it to anyone interested in cloning and assisted suicide. Even though I was afraid of the 40% worth midterm and 60% worth final, the questions are straightforward and no surprises at all.

Schafer is an excellent professor. He is very well-informed, kind, and is an interesting story teller. Getting an A is not unreasonable so long as you listen well in lecture, do the readings, and use your brain.

Dr. Schafer tells the best stories. There are no notes, just lectures, but he says everything in such a way that you'll remember as long as you listen. There's no textbook but an inexpensive booklet of necessary readings. You'll learn a lot from him! As long as you know what you're talking about & keep up with the readings, you'll do well.

Awesome prof, really interesting class (ethics and biomedicine). No text, just a photocopied booklet of articles, which I appreciated. He lectures some but gets students involved in discussing the topic, moderating really well. Worth taking this class purely for his teaching. Do all the readings, the exam will only ask about a couple, hard to BS.

Absolutely amazing prof! Lectures off the top of his head, yet always stays on point - will keep you captivated for the whole class. Gives great insight on the material, and a very fair marker - go to class, think critically, and you'll do well. Hands down one of the best profs I have ever had!

Not great at all. As an Ethics prof and in the media could be from the Singer school. Does not think folk with differences have rights. Development differences have no rights. Kill the costly!
