Super fun class! Make sure you put in a decent effort for discussion assignments. Does not provide a great background like who the gods and goddesses are, it helps if you have some background knowledge of who they are (if you read percy jackson you will be fine). Is very enthusiastic about describing the myths. Be prepared to write, there is no MC

Fair warning he doesn't have MC tests they're all short answer or long answer questions so you really have to know the material going into tests. He often referred to his classes as "story time with uncle Craig" and that's exactly what it felt like. Definitely would recommend actively taking notes during lectures.

super compassionate prof, I loved this class, he's got engaging lectures and he clearly cares about our understanding. The 2 tests are heavily weighted and you do have to study hard to do well on the tests but the material is so interesting that it doesn't feel like work. Great course but you must go to class because the slides are minimal

An amazing prof, he made things interesting and fun. Super understanding if you have stuff going on. The class takes effort to pass but if you are on top of memorization of vocab it isn't very stressful.

Dr. Maynes is a great professor, but you HAVE TO complete the readings and attend class (participation graded). appx. 3-4 hours of HW a week. If you participate, and show effort, you will get good grades, no matter how you misinterpret, or get something wrong. Good office hours available, and will help you with any bumps you hit. Amazing prof.

Really awesome class. Really cool to see how ancient Romans are reflected on film. Craig makes lectures really interesting. Definitely need to put in some effort for an A, but it's manageable and Craig is very understanding when you need an extension.

Great guy, good teacher. He gives extensions when asked, but is a real harsh grader. If you take this class, be sure that you're good at being critical and an overall good writer or you wont do well.

Craig makes the lectures super easy to understand and weekly assignments helped students really grasp the material. Synchronous lecture helped was an easy way to ask question, but he's also accessible in office hours.

Had this guy last year for GRST 341 and wow what a difference. He put in so much effort for his follow-up lectures and you only need to watch those to do well. He marks essays extremely easy and he also gives extensive feedback so you can improve. Dr. Maynes made an interesting course even more interesting. He's a real gem and a nice guy, 5/5

I'm so surprised by the negative reviews for Craig here. I took beginner's Latin with him remotely (because of the pandemic) and he was amazing. Craig obviously cares a lot about his students success, and was very flexible with all of the weirdness of online learning. The course itself was not difficult if you kept caught up with the work as well.

Clearly cares about students and puts a lot of work into his online lectures. One of the best profs ever. His classes are designed to help students learn the material in a super organized way. Loved how he connected the course to Roman history.

Very glad that I got to do continuing Latin classes with Dr. Maynes, his dedication to teaching is admirable. He obviously put a lot of work into the prerecorded lectures and the workload was consistent and never unmanageable, especially considering the class level. Plus, he lets you pick your own passage for the final project. Highly recommended!

Craig has been awesome this semester and is what every teacher should strive to be when teaching online. Our expectations for the course were clear and I always knew what I had to get done for the week, and he was passionate about the material he taught. This course made me want to switch majors, in large part due to Craig.

I had Craig for first year Latin. He's a great teacher, cares about students, and gives lots of feedback opportunities. He's also really approachable, so it's easy to go to him for help. If you go to class and keep up with his recommended schedule you'll do fine. I'm glad I have him again next year.
