Comment:
Prof. Maxwell's class is pretty stressful. He assigns a lot of homework and rolls a die at the end of class to decide which assignment he's collecting. The topic is fairly hard to wrap your mind around, and if you don't go to class (generally at 8 am oof), you won't pass. Exams are pretty difficult but he lets you choose each category's weighting.

Maxwell is one of the best math professors. He's a fantastic lecturer but attendance is optional. The lectures I attended are all worthy because he explains concepts thoroughly and full of homour. His office hours are the best and he has a chubby dog. Requires reading the textbook (which he wrote) before class but it's accessible from PMA library.

Hardest class I've taken at UT so far. It's really not for the faint-hearted, and I personally would've enjoyed his class a lot more if I were not alr taking 17 hours. He expects you to understand and apply every tidbit of info, and then some. Objectively, he's the best prof for probability, very knowledgeable and funny. Just beware of the workload

He was a genuinely kind and funny professor. His textbook and class examples have some humor built in that made the material a bit more entertaining and interesting. This course was a lot of work for me though, I felt like it was the course load of like 3 courses in the amount of time it took to complete homeworks and study. Tests were difficult.

I personally did not enjoy the format of the class. It was typically 20-30 minutes of lecture then around 40 minutes of group work in Zoom breakout rooms and 10-15 minutes of an individual or pair quiz. While this format likely worked well for in person classes I think it translated poorly to online. I like Maxwell and I wish he lectured more >:(

Wasn't an easy class. His class lectures were amazing. He is really picky while grading the exams, but he grades with z-score so you have to be on the top of the list. Homework is due after every class. He will make you work hard. I only recommend taking his class if you are planning to take actuary exam p.

The independent inquiry style worked well for me, but if it's not for you avoid this class. He is kind, approachable, and very clearly excited to teach this subject. As others have said, if you're looking for an easy class, look elsewhere, but if you put in the work in this class you'll learn a lot.

Write as many thing as you can even small details on the test because all those details matter. Even drawing graph. Heavy homework and group work. There are 5-6 projects to do. Good luck with this class! You will earn the grade anyway. His handwriting is beautiful tho:)

I took both M362K & M378K with Maxwell. His classes are a lot of work but its really worth it if you enjoy math. You will learn a lot and he is a wonderful professor. He is very good at teaching and he is very approachable. He will always give you the grade you deserve so if you put in effort you will be alright. Go to his office hours if ur lost.

Took both M362K and M378K with Dr. Maxwell. Lots of homework but doable. If you got stuck on anything, go to his office hours and he'll explain it very clearly and thoroughly. If you are Actuarial Science major, definitely take him!

Be aware that 362K is an independent inquiry course, meaning that it's designed for students to learn independently (no lectures) while class time is reserved for asking the prof questions and working on collaborative assignments. Maxwell is a good professor, but this teaching style was not for me, and I felt it got worse online during COVID.

I loved this class, but it was a lot of work. The material isn't that bad, honestly. His textbook is actually pretty great. If you're looking to become an actuary, Dr. Maxwell's course is an ideal choice. If you're really looking to make the semester as easy as possible, then this won't be your first choice. It's a great experience, nonethele.

Only giving him a 4 because his handwriting is great. I have mixed feelings about this man - he's very knowledgable, but absolutely refused to lecture and instead threw us headfirst into unfamiliar material. I found only 25% of his innavigable book to be useful, plus he's objectively a very strict grader. You never know when you've written enough.

If you are like me and fall asleep during lectures try as you may, Maxwell is for you because there are no lectures. He acknowledges the oft-neglected fact that in math, putting problems into practice is the only thing that matters- and his class operates on that instead. On a side note, I've also never met a man this energetic at 8AM in my life.

Only take Maxwell if you actually want to be an actuary, otherwise find someone else. He is a great and funny professor, but the classroom is flipped learning and he grades you by your z-score which is fine as long as you're doing better than the average. 3 pieces of HW and a partner quiz almost every single class. Tests are okay.

This class is a lot of work, designed to prepare actuarial majors to prepare for their P exam. There's something due everyday in class, and you are expected to do post class homework, pre class homework, and write notes from the textbook before each class period. I definitely learned a lot, just not sure if it was worth it bc I'm not actuarial.

Fast paced class. The class isn't hard, but there is a lot of material being crammed into one semester. There's something due every lecture. The final is all multiple choice, but other exams had short answers.

Classroom is flipped, so he only does a mini lecture most classes. He is an awesome professor and loves what he does, but I wish he would have gone over the difficult topics much more. Tests were extremely difficult and you must have an inside and out understanding of the material. All grades are based off your z-score, which saved me.

Flipped Classroom, he does give a few lectures sometimes. 3 test that are all pretty fair. Hw is a bit excessive because you have problems from quest and the textbook. group quiz everyday and in-class problems but some aren't graded. He is absolutely hilarious. The class is manageable, but you must consistently put in the work..

Hard class but good professor tries to explain math as best as he can. However, he doesn't prepare you well for tests. Tests are very intense and require solid knowledge of the material inside and out. Since it is a flipped classroom, you must keep up or you will not be able to pass. Only take if you're an actuary; he does an excellent job in that.
