Janis is a wonderful person, but this class was not easy and very time consuming. She does not listen to student feedback at all and brushes off all suggestions. Way too much work on labs supposed to be completed in three hours. If you want a higher GPA, this is a class to skip if you don't need it.

This shouldn't be considered a first year course if this is the work it entails. The standards are too high. I would be calculating what I need to get on the exam to pass the class, but i need my grades to do so, and she hasn't uploaded those. So I don't even know what grade I have going into the exam!

Janis is a very kind and passionate professor, but the expectations of a first year student taking Geology 102 were much too high. The work load and information you need to retain is ridiculous, and the exams are much too difficult. It is almost as if they're written for an aspiring geologist, and my career path is far from that. Not recommended.

Janis is an amazing prof who really cares about the students. She tries to make things interesting, is east to understand and follow along, doesn't try to trick you, and genuinely wants you to do well. Not going to find a better professor at the u of r in my opinion, if you can't take a class with her I recommend it!

The class was very good overall. Janis seems to love teaching and cares a lot about her students. The information was a bit heavy to me, although if you are interested in geology I think the course would be very easy.

Janis is a very kind and caring prof. She allows many opportunities for bonus marks and is prompt when responding to emails. However, the course load of material is quite heavy for a first year course. She records many lectures and they are often quite long. If Janis was not the prof this course would be almost unbearable.

Janis is so kind and an amazing prof. Her expectations are very clear and the tests and labs were very fair. As long as you follow along in the lectures and take notes you'll do well. She gives lots of examples and helpful learning tools. She also gave out easy bonus mark assignments.

Worst class and professor I've ever had. Waste of time every class. If you are taking this class to fill the natural science elective pick something else because this class was awful. The amount she expects her students to know for a first year class is ridiculous. Not clear on what students should be studying for exams and unclear questions on exa

She is a really nice person & genuinely passionate about geology. Gives out about 5% in bonus marks. Although some questions on her midterm and final come out of left field they are either covered in the lecture/ labs or can be solved with inductive reasoning.

She loves Geology and always attempted to make class fun. It is lecture heavy and there is a lot of information to cover. However, she does give out bonus marks through extra credit work. She really loves what she teaches and is very inspirational. If you have rocks or pictures of Geologically related stuff she loves to show it to the class or meme

She is not very strict on what she expects of her students and what you must do in order to succeed. She did have a couple multiple choice questions on her final that 100% were not covered in the course material. Not a difficult course in all though. Labs are important. Lectures are not mandatory

Janis is awesome! She is very passionate about what she teaches. Attending every lecture is definitely worth it. I do with the class has more assignments to do, and not just largest tests. Overall, it's a pretty great course and is hard as expected from a natural science.

This course was tough but it was what you would expect for a natural science. Tests weren't too tough but they do require constant studying through the semester. The labs were easy but review is necessary. You must attend class and take notes. Study during the semester and not just for exams and you'll do great!

I studied to hard for tests but still barely passed the class. I hated the lectures, the structure of it, as well as tests and lab exam. This class made me hate geology. This is a total waste of money. Just don't take it if you don't want to feel frustrated or probably have an F on your transcript.

Great class. Lots to go over SO TAKE NOTES and make sure to read them, final and midterms were easy, she goes over in class what is best to focus your studying on. Funny, super friendly, and usually avaliable after class for questions

Janis is super nice and is willing to answer any questions. There is quite a bit of course material which does make the tests a bit tough. Although i felt that most of the test questions were fair and came straight from the notes. The amount of studying that goes in is what you would expect out of a natural science.(this isn't a liberal arts class)

Very nice person but just a horrible instructor! She doesn't understand that her way of teaching makes her students hate geology! All her tests were hard and long. It is impossible to memorize all what she wanted us to. I am really happy that I will never again have to take a class with her. Geology is probably a good science but not with Janis!

I am an A's student but her course I barely passed. The course probably is good but her teaching was so fast and confusing! On the tests the questions were the ones she never mentioned during her lectures! The lab test was too long to complete it in 1,5 hr and the questions were much harder than during lab practices. I am so glad this hell is over!

The course was so difficult! She was rarely available during her office hours. The lab final exam was too long. Her midterm and the final exams were very difficult. You have to memorize all the notes, the textbook suctions, and the lab manual. It didn't feel like first year course. I will never take another course with her. Very disappointed!
